Notes for Robert DePriest CARDEN
Robert Carden and Jenny Howery Carden lived their lives in Montgomery County. It is thought she came to Montgomery County from Botetourt County with her brother Daniel Howery when a young girl. Daniel was surety on Robert and Jenny's marriage bond and also bought her portion of their father, Jacob Howery's estate from them. From the records, it is believed Robert was a sharecropper and did not own property. On occasion he found it necessary to mortgage the household furniture and the crops in the field to provide for his family. Nine known children were born to them and I have extensive records on these children as well as Joseph and Mary's. Jenny's death date is unknown, but from census records we know that Robert died between 1850 and 1860. Robert is living with his son, John, and his family on the 1850 Montgomery County, VA. Chronicles of The Scotch-Irish Settlement in VA., Augusta 1745-1800, Vol. 2, pg. 331/357 (LIB/CNGS 65-15351), a Robert Carden, who was of age, married Janet Steele, 17 Dec 1799, married 19 Dec 1799. It is assumed that this is the correct Robert. There is also a Robert Carden who married Mary Clinebill, in Augusta Co., VA on 18 Sept 1813. The minister was Wright Burgess.
Notes for Janet STEELE
Janet Steele's marriage bond was dated 17 Dec 1799, and was married on 19 Dec 1799. Her father, James Steele consented. Witnesses were William & Polly Steele. Thomas Fulton was bondsman and William King was the minister.

Notes for George H. CARDEN
George H.'s (son of Robert and Jenny (Howery) Carden) middle name is probably Howery. It is believed George H. was named for his uncle, George Howery and the initial H. is for Howery as well. George was born around 1809 being the first child of the couple. He married twice, the first wife was Sarah Pratt. Her parents were James Pratt and Sarah Hall. Sarah Hall was the daughter of Asa Hall, who was a Revolutionary soldier who served from Duchass County, New York.
After the War, he came to Virginia buying much land on the North Fork of the Roanoke River. George and Sarah Pratt Carden had 2 known children, Robert Andrew and Mary Jane Carden. Very soon after Sarah's death, about 1839, George married again. He married Mary, whose maiden name is unknown, although she did have a child before the marriage whose last name was Williams.
George and Mary Carden lived in the Blacksburg area and had several children among them a set of twins. On the census records, his occupation is listed as a "Shoemaker." George outlived both of his wives and his death occurred under somewhat mysterious circumstances. Sometime after 1870, he traveled by foot from the Newport area where he lived, to the Parrott area to see Robert Andrew and his family. Time went by and he did not return home alarming the family. Months later a skeleton was found under a cliff overhang which was on his usual path. It was speculated it was George and he could have been murdered in a robbery attempt. This story has been handed down through the family and was related to me by a great grandchild as it was told to him.

Notes for Robert Andrew CARDEN
Robert Andrew was 5'10", gray eyes and light colored hair. He enlisted 28 May 1863 in Pulaski County, VA. and was a Pvt. in Co. "I", 36th Virginia Inf. He was in Charlottesville, VA in the hospital on the 7th & 8th of June 1864, and was captured at Waynesboro, VA on 2 March 1865. He was in prison at Ft. Delaware and released at the end of the war on 19 June 1865. He received a small pension as he had no visible means of support and was blind in one eye from working in the coalmines.
Robert Andrew Carden married Melvina Journell, daughter of William Journell and Margaret (Peggy) Honaker Journell. They were married 12 March 1856 and eight children were born of this union. It is suspected Melvina died from childbirth complications.
Robert Andrew Carden married Mary Isabell Runion/Runyan, 14 May 1873, in Pulaski County, VA. To this union were born seven children.
Robert Andrew Carden married Melvina Journell, daughter of William Journell and Margaret (Peggy) Honaker Journell. They were married 12 March 1856 and eight children were born of this union. It is suspected Melvina died from childbirth complications. Children by name from this union were: Sarah Ellen, Charles Matterson, Miniesota, John William, Minerva Lee, James Robert, Fannie Emmaline and George Walter Carden.
Robert Andrew Carden married Mary Isabell Runion/Runyan, 14 May 1873, in Pulaski County, VA. To this union were born seven children namely: Harvey Jeremiah, David Cloyd, Callie Annie, Mary Parris "Molly", Frank Earnest "Jube", Virginia Bell and Edward Berman Carden.
The 1850 census records indicate Robert Andrew and Mary Jane Carden were not living with George, their father. As previously stated, George lived in the Blacksburg area. Records indicate Robert Andrew and sister Mary Jane were living somewhere in Pulaski County at the time of their marriages and earlier.
Madison Pratt, who was their Uncle (Mother's brother), lived in Pulaski County, and on the census records after 1850 they are living close to his residence. In later years, family recalled Mary Jane married a Rogers and among their children was a little blind boy named Andrew after her brother. He was known as "Cousin Andy" and sold household flavorings, spices and other goods from door to door. When he came to the area he spent the night with George Walter Carden and Florence L. Carden. It was my mother's task to walk with him to the Belspring Presbyterian Church to start him on his way home. It is not known how he was able to travel but family recalls he made regular trips to the area.
Census records confirm he was blind from birth.
Note many of these children were named for other family members such as Sarah
Ellen after Robert's mother, George after his father, Charles Matterson (probably Madison) after his uncle Madison Pratt. [and] John William named for Melvina's father, William Journlee. Callie Annie (sometimes Ann) may have been named for Mary Isabelle's mother. Mary Parris and Virginia Bell were named for Mary Isabelle herself. Note David Cloyd Carden's name. Robert Andrew Carden worked on the Cloyd farm for many years and this child was named David Cloyd for the man for whom he worked. Sarah Ellen Carden met her future husband, Hugh Brody Carden, while living on this farm. Probably Hugh came to work on the farm and it was a cold day in early Spring. Hugh seeing Sarah had no shoes gave her the shoes from his own feet. Later they would marry, and this story would be handed down through their family. They resided in the Christiansburg area during their married life.
Belspring Baptist Church records tell us many of the children of Robert Andrew Carden were members of this church. The dates of their conversion and baptism are recorded giving the minister and the creek (Back Creek or Neck Creek) where they were baptized. These records have been copied and are available in the Virginia Room of the Roanoke City Library. Ferrell's store in Belspring during the early days also tell us many of the Cardens shopped there and copies of these records are in the same library.
From Robert Andrew's civil war record, we glean the following physical description. He was five foot ten inches tall, gray eyes and light hair. He enlisted 28 May 1863 in Pulaski County, VA. He was in Company I, 36th VA Infantry and was detached (sent home) at one point to mine coal. He was in Charlottesville, VA in the hospital on the 7 and 8 of June 1864, and was captured at Waynesboro, VA, 2 March 1865. He was in prison at Ft. Delaware and released at the end of the War on 19 June 1865. After the war he received a very small pension because he had no visible means of support and was blind in one eye from his work in the coal mines.
He would walk to Radford buy a hog's head and carry it home in a sack on his back. Most people called him "Andy" Carden and during the last years of his life he resided with his unmarried children. The child giving the information on his death certificate was George Walter Carden. He probably was not living with him, but he may have been there when he died. He died April 4, 1915.
